WTM vs AWTM Training – Understanding the Difference. When it comes to traffic management training in WA there are various course types, names and abbreviations that are used – what are the differences? 

When looking at upskilling yourself in the traffic management industry from a Basic Worksite Traffic Management (BWTM) or Basic Worksite Traffic Management & Traffic Control (BWTM & TC) accreditation there are 2 accreditations that people consider:  

Worksite Traffic Management (WTM) and Advanced Worksite Traffic Management (AWTM).

Worksite Traffic Management (WTM) 

Worksite Traffic Management (WTM) is suited to those workers onsite that are required to conduct risk assessments and modify traffic guidance schemes (TGSs) within the scope of the Traffic Management Plan (TMP).  

The WTM course provides participants with the theory and practical skills required to monitor the effectiveness of traffic guidance schemes including adding and/or removing signs and devices within the scope and objectives of the Traffic Management Plan. The course covers conducting risk assessment, analysing project and road/traffic data, amending traffic guidance schemes, working with a range of stakeholders and quality review processes.   

Upon successful completion of the Main Roads WA Worksite Traffic Management (WTM) accreditation, you are permitted to amend TMPs in accordance with the objectives, statutory and regulatory standards. Collect and analyse site information, data and conduct risk assessment, that is required within a TMP. Select and modify a TMP and TGS based on risk assessment to ensure a safe and effective worksite operation just to name a few. 

The WTM course is suited to job roles such as Traffic Controllers, Team Crew Leaders, Site Supervisors or Project Managers.

Advanced Worksite Traffic Management (AWTM) 

Advanced Worksite Traffic Management (AWTM) course is suited to those working in an office environment designing and developing Traffic Management Plans (TMPs). 

The AWTM course provides participants with the theory and practical skills required to prepare detailed Traffic Management Plans (TMPs). This course covers conducting risk assessment, analysing project and road/traffic data, developing traffic guidance schemes, working with a range of stakeholders, quality review processes and obtaining required authorisations. 

Upon successful completion of the Main Roads WA Advanced Worksite Traffic Management (AWTM) accreditation, you are permitted to design TMPs in accordance with the project brief, statutory and regulatory standards. Identify key stakeholders and prepare advance notification requirements. Identify and obtain authorisations required including variation to standards just to name a few.  

The AWTM course is suited for job roles such as Traffic Planners, Project Managers, Engineers and Approving Officers.

Common Questions  

Q: What level of experience is needed to undertake the WTM course? 

A: This level of course is suited to those already working in traffic management and/or construction roles, with at least 12 months’ experience. Please ensure you refer to the course pre-entry requirements to ensure you are eligible. This is not an entry-level course. 

Q: What if my BWTM accreditation is expired? Can I still enrol in WTM training? 

A: You are required to have a current certificate of accreditation in Basic Worksite Traffic Management. Exemption from holding a current BWTM accreditation may be offered for employees working in Main Roads, Local Governments, or other approving bodies. 

Q: What can I do to best prepare for the WTM course and are there any resources I am required to bring? 

A: We recommend visiting our [downloads] section on our website. Within this section, we provide a range of resources that can easily be downloaded, read and assist you familiarise information prior to attending training. 

For this course, there are various resources (both paid and free) you are required to print and bring along during your classroom sessions. We provide specific details upon enrolment for you to prepare and get ready for training. 

Q: Are there many assessments required to be completed after the WTM training course? 

A: This course allows time for all assessments to be completed within the 4 days. 

Q: What level of experience is needed to undertake the AWTM course? 

A: This level of course is suited to those already working in traffic management and/or construction roles, with at least 12 months’ experience. Please ensure you refer to the course pre-entry requirements to ensure you are eligible. This is not an entry-level course. In addition to completing intensive 4-day classroom training, there are additional requirements to design detailed traffic management plans. 

Q: After completing the 4 day AWTM training course, will there be any assessments to complete and if so how long will I have to prepare and submit my assessments?  

A: Yes, after completing classroom training there are further assessments to be completed.  Students are provided ten (10) working days from the completion of classroom training to prepare and submit their first assessment. 

All assessment due dates and instructions are provided at your training course, discussed with your Trainer & Assessor and easily accessible in your dedicated student log in via our learning management system.
