Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) struck by a semi-trailer resulting in LTI
Date of Incident: 9 April 2025
Time of Incident: 2:25 PM
EQSafe Event Type: Injury
Potential Consequence: Moderate
What Happened
On the afternoon of 9 April 2025, traffic management operations were underway on the southbound lane of Forrest Highway, where the speed had been temporarily reduced to 60km/h. A Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) vehicle was operating in the left hand (slow) lane, travelling approximately 50m behind a light vehicle that was actively retrieving traffic management signage from the roadside. As the light vehicle began to decelerate, the TMA vehicle also reduced speed accordingly to maintain the required safety buffer.
At approximately 2:25pm, the TMA was struck at speed by an approaching truck. The impact caused the truck to veer into the right hand (fast) lane and subsequently onto the medium strip. Both the TMA vehicle and the truck sustained damage as a result of the collision.
The driver of the TMA vehicle sustained a knee injury and was visibly shaken by the incident. He was transported to the nearest hospital for assessment. A formal investigation has commenced.
This incident highlights the critical importance of maintaining vigilance and safe following distances around traffic management vehicles, particularly TMAs. All road users — including heavy vehicle operators — must adhere to temporary speed limits and remain alert in active work zones.
