Austroads has released Edition 1.2 of the Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (AGTTM), introducing updates across Parts 1–7, 9 and 10 to better align the Guide with contemporary traffic management practices.
According to Austroads, approximately 30% of the content within these Parts has been updated, with a focus on improving clarity, strengthening consistency of terminology, and refining guidance while maintaining the existing structure of the Guide. The intention is to support easier integration with existing temporary traffic management documentation and processes.
Before diving into the changes, it’s important for Western Australian practitioners to understand one key point:
At the time of writing this article this updated edition has not yet been formally adopted in Western Australia. Changes will only become mandatory once they are incorporated into the relevant WA guidance and regulatory framework, such as the Main Roads WA Traffic Management for Works on Roads Code of Practice.
What Is the AGTTM?
The Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (AGTTM) provides nationally consistent guidance for the planning, design, implementation, and operation of temporary traffic management across Australia and New Zealand.
The Guide is divided into several Parts covering topics such as:
- Traffic management planning
- Static worksites
- Mobile works
- Short-term low-impact worksites
- Traffic controller operations
- Sample layouts
- Risk management and supporting guidance
It serves as a key reference document for road authorities, traffic management companies, planners, designers, and field personnel. You can access the full guide here.
