Heavy Vehicle Near Miss on Great Northern Highway

What Happened
At approximately 1:05 PM on 31st October 2024, a triple Pantech heavy vehicle travelling southbound on Great Northern Highway encountered a Portable Traffic Control Device (PTCD) red light at a shoulder-widening work site.
The driver braked suddenly upon realising the PTCD was on red, causing the trailers to swerve and leave the road. The first and second trailers slid sideways, with the first trailer knocking over the PTCD. The trailer came to a halt close to the Traffic Controller (TC) vehicle, where the TC was seated.

Next Steps:
Heavy Vehicle Services have been notified, and a formal ICAM investigation is underway. Lessons learned from the incident will be shared in a final Grey Banner Alert once the investigation is complete.
This serious potential incident is aligned with the Main Roads Critical Risk profile concerning vehicles and driving.
