What’s Changing & Why It Matters
Main Roads WA has confirmed that Portable Traffic Control Device (PTCD) training will become mandatory from 1 March 2026. This shift ensures that anyone operating PTCDs on WA roads has the right skills and knowledge to work safely and align with the latest Main Roads WA Code of Practice and the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (AGTTM).
The introduction of mandatory PTCD training aims to:
- Improve safety for workers and road users
- Standardise competency across WA
- Strengthen compliance with national and state requirements
Training will now include the following two nationally recognised units of competency:
- RIIWHS206 Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs
- RIIWHS303 Position, set up and program portable traffic control devices
New Entrants
Anyone undertaking Main Roads WA Basic Worksite Traffic Management & Traffic Controller (BWTM & TC) accreditation for the first time after 1 March 2026 will be required to complete the additional PTCD units listed above.
To support this change, the overall course duration will increase from 3 days to 3.5 days, covering five units of competency. This ensures new entrants gain the expanded skills needed to safely and effectively operate PTCDs.
Existing Workers
Current workers who already hold a BWTM & TC accreditation can continue operating under their existing accreditation. At their next renewal after 1 March 2026, they will transition to the updated framework and complete a revised reaccreditation program that includes the two newly required PTCD units.
From 2026 onward, the reaccreditation duration will increase from 1 day to 1.5 days, covering two units of competency aligned with the updated requirements.
Important: These changes apply only to the BWTM & TC accreditation. The BWTM-only accreditation remains unchanged.
