This one and a half (1.5) day reaccreditation course provides participants with updated information on the latest changes and requirements to safely implement a traffic management plan, control traffic with a stop/slow bat, and operate portable traffic control devices (PTCDs). The course refreshes and extends participants’ knowledge and practical skills to manage traffic safely and effectively, ensuring traffic flow is maintained and the safety risks to all road users and workers are minimised. Training is delivered face-to-face and incorporates classroom learning, group discussions, case studies, simulated exercises, and practical application in both simulated and live traffic environments. Assessment is conducted through knowledge questionnaires, practical demonstrations, and direct observation across a variety of scenarios.

Apply current regulatory and industry requirements, including Main Roads WA CoP and Austroads Guides

Set up, program, operate, monitor, and close down temporary traffic signs, stop/slow bats and portable traffic control devices PTCDs in line with the TMP and legislative requirements

Control traffic safely with consideration for speed, environment, vehicles, sight lines, weather and contingency measures

Communicate effectively on site using two-way radios and other workplace methods

Conduct risk assessments to address hazards, personal safety, site conditions and emergency situations

Recognise safety implications and personal responsibilities when managing traffic at roadworks

Work in compliance with WHS, environmental and organisational requirements

Competencies

Upon successful completion, all participants will be issued by AusQ Training RTO 52361 with the following nationally recognised Statement of Attainments:

AusQ Training is a Main Roads WA approved training provider, therefore, upon successful completion and meeting all the required Main Roads WA pre requisites, participants will also receive a digital Main Roads WA Basic Worksite Traffic Management (BWTM) & Traffic Controller (TC) accreditation (valid for 3 years). 

Days Time
1.5 days 7:30 am – 4:00 pm (arrive 15 minutes early)
7:30 am – 11:30 am or may at times be scheduled 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm (half day)

In order to meet Main Roads WA requirements, participants MUST:

Provide photographic identification on arrival (e.g. driver’s licence, passport)

Hold a current Main Roads WA Basic Worksite Traffic Management & Traffic Controller (BWTM & TC) accreditation (or be within the 3 month grace period of expiry)

Hold a Statement of Attainment in RIIWHS302E Implement traffic management plan, RIIWHS205E Control traffic with a stop-slow bat and RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace, or equivalent

Applicants must have sufficient Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) skills to successfully complete this course. The training involves reading and interpreting work instructions and legislation, understanding traffic guidance schemes, performing basic calculations, completing site documentation, programming electronic traffic control devices, and actively listening and asking questions to clarify instructions. As part of the application process, all applicants are required to complete a short online LLND assessment. The results of this assessment are used to determine eligibility and suitability for entry into the course.

Be in a suitable level of physical fitness and health, as training requires lifting and moving signs and devices (approximately 6–8 kg each), setting up and packing down sites, and standing for periods of up to two hours while conducting traffic control

Hold a current or previously valid driver’s licence recognised by the WA Department of Transport (provisional licences are accepted; however, learner’s permits and R-N moped class licences are not)

Provide evidence of a valid Construction Induction Training Card (commonly referred to as a Blue/White Card).

Have evidence of active engagement in the industry within the previous 12 months such as work experience and/or employer/client references

Provide details of at least three (3) worksites from the past twelve (12) months, including date, location/suburb, description of works, contractor, and supervisor’s name and contact details for verification. Evidence must relate to the accreditation being sought. Traffic Controllers who also hold BWTM accreditation may submit evidence of BWTM tasks to be eligible for the Traffic Control refresher course.

A completed and signed site specific SWMS, JSA or other hazard assessment used on a worksite by the applicant within the last twelve (12) months

All required documents and evidence must be submitted with your enrolment at least ten (10) working days before the course commences. This ensures your eligibility, secures your place in the course, and enables the issuing of Main Roads WA accreditation upon successful completion. 

Participants are required to wear appropriate work attire, including: 

Steel-capped boots

High-visibility clothing

Gloves

Hat and sun protection

Wet weather gear (as required)

Wearing the correct PPE is essential, as the course involves practical training and assessment in live and outdoor environments.

It is a Main Roads WA requirement to supply the listed pre-entry evidence and unfortunately if you are unable to supply this evidence prior to your training, you will be ineligible to undertake re-accreditation training and required to complete the full course again.  Please make contact with our Customer Support team to discuss your situation.

Main Roads WA will transition to the new requirements effective 1 March 2026, which will now include the portable traffic control device (PTCD) units. As a result, the training duration will change from a 1-day session to 1.5 days to accommodate the inclusion of the PTCD units.

Industry personnel seeking Traffic Controller re-accreditation after 1 March 2026 will also be issued with the updated units of competency.
