Operate Truck Mounted Attenuator (OTMA)

Short CoursesCourses
This two (2) day course provides students with the theory and practical skills required to safely and efficiently operate a truck-mounted attenuator (TMA). Truck-mounted attenuator operators play an important role in operating TMAs in ensuring all other members of the work crews are adequately protected from out of control errant vehicles in or around a work zone, a trafficable lane, or road verge area. TMAs are designed to safely absorb the kinetic energy of an errant vehicle should it impact it. Drivers must have the knowledge and understanding for work crew safety including the correct location, providing suitable shunt-forward distances, adequate warning systems for work crew and travelling public if possible.

Learning Outcomes

Positioning and operating TMAs

Responsibilities of TMA Drivers and working effectively with others on-site

Safe, efficient operation of the TMA and implementing traffic guidance schemes

Pre-operational inspection checks of TMA including fault finding and reporting

Entering and exiting traffic with a TMA and working with other vehicles and TMAs onsite

Static and mobile worksite operations including emergency planning preparedness

Communications protocol, two-way radio communications and operating VMS and arrow board devices on the TMA

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Unfortunately, no.  This course requires participants to hold a heavy rigid (HR) driver’s licence to enter and complete the course.  This is required due to the type of Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) we use during the training course.

We require a minimum 80 hours of heavy vehicle driving experience evidence to be issued the OTMA industry course accreditation.  We recommend to continue gaining heavy vehicle driving experience first, and once obtained, to then complete this training.  We require participants to be qualified holding a heavy rigid driver’s licence and also confident operating a truck and having this minimum experience evidence helps achieve that.

For those who are still gaining heavy vehicle driving experience, we can still accept an enrolment now for a future-dated course.  However, will require all evidence to be supplied no later than 10 working days prior, to receive your full confirmation of attendance.

In this circumstance, we recommend contacting our Customer Support team to discuss your situation further.  We would ask further questions and seek more information such as – when were you working last, what was your last work position, how long has it been since you’ve either operated heavy vehicle or traffic management etc.  With this information we can determine eligibility or what steps to take next.

We recommend checking the TMA course entry requirements and confirming which criteria you currently hold and can provide evidence.

Having relocated from another state, you will need to complete a bridging course to firstly obtain a Main Roads WA Basic Worksite Traffic Management (BWTM) accreditation, which is a pre-entry requirement of this course.

Currently, training completed in other states can vary to the current requirements set by Main Roads WA.  Therefore we will request a copy of your training certification documents of what you have completed.  This can be copies of your Statement of Attainments or alternatively USI Transcript.  Once we receive these documents we can determine which pathway is the best.

We allow up to 5 participants only for this course.

This course is restricted to smaller class sizes to maximise the time available for each participant, to both learn and be assessed operating truck mounted attenuators.
